Dortmund's 17-year-old Christian Pulisic could join USMNT for qualifier

If Jurgen Klinsmann had his way, he would’ve had a 17-year-old in camp with the US national team.


Borussia Dortmund announced on Tuesday that teenage midfielder Christian Pulisic was called by Klinsmann to the USMNT for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala but had pull out due to an illness.

MLSsoccer.com confirmed with US Soccer several reportslater Tuesday that Pulisic could join the senior team for their second qualifier against Guatemala if he recovers in time for the March 29 match at Columbus’ MAPFRE Stadium (7 pm ET; ESPN2).


The USMNT will play their first qualifier of the FIFA window at Guatemala on Friday (10 pm ET; beIN Sports, NBC Universo).


Dortmund released the following statement regarding Pulisic:


“Christian Pulisic had to cancel his trip to the US national team because of an infection. The 17-year-old does however hope that he can join the national team at a slightly later stage. The US team is playing against Guatemala.”


Pulisic was promoted to Dortmund’s senior squad over the Bundesliga’s winter break and has made six first-team appearances since his move up from the reserve side. A member of the US team at last year’s Under-17 World Cup, the Hershey, Pa., native is also eligible to represent Croatia and will remain so until he earns a USMNT cap in an official match.
