LA Galaxy transfer midfielder Juninho to Liga MX side Club Tijuana

The LA Galaxy have parted ways with another key member of their five-year run as one of MLS’s best clubs, announcing on Wednesday that they have transferred Juninho to Liga MX side Club Tijuana.

The news comes on the heels of the Tuesday transfer of center back Omar Gonzalez to Mexican club Pachuca. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Both players were key members of the Galaxy’s MLS Cup championship seasons in 2011, 2013 and 2014 and Supporters’ Shield winning campaigns of 2010 and 2011.

“We thank Juninho for his contributions on and off the field during his time here,” LA Galaxy head coach and general manager Bruce Arena said in a statement. “We wish him the best of luck with Tijuana.”

The 26-year-old midfielder, who started his professional career with Brazilian club Sao Paulo, his hometown club, joined LA on loan during the 2010 MLS season. His stay with the Galaxy was made permanent ahead of the 2013 season.

In 187 appearances – of which 180 were starts – Juninho scored 18 regular-season goals and recorded 23 assists. He is coming off one of his finest seasons with the Galaxy in 2015, scoring four goals and recording a career-high seven assists.

The Galaxy will host Xolos at StubHub Center in a preseason exhibition on Feb. 9 ahead of the start of the 2016 MLS season.
