AMSTERDAM – Free agent striker Cesar Romero joined Macedonian kings FK Vardar despite interest from Russia, Serbia and Mexico, inking a one-year deal with an option for a second.

According to his agent, Rouben Vesmadian, Romero rejected an offer from Russian Premier League outfit Amkar Perm before signing with the eight-time Macedonian champions. The 26-year-old Californian impressed on a trial with the cash-strapped RPL club, but they were unable to make a sufficient bid for his services.

The former Chivas USA man arrives after a season that saw him lead FC Pyunik to the Armenian crown with a Golden Boot-total of 21 league goals. Romero also bagged a goal in three early Champions League qualifying matches this summer before running out of contract this week. In addition to Amkar Perm, he received serious interest from the likes of Serbian champs Partizan Belgrade, as well as the Mexican duo of Atlante and Chivas.

Vardar, who have won three of the last four Macedonian titles, will open the new season with an Aug. 9 visit from promoted second-division champs Shkupi. The Red-and-Blacks also played in Champions League second round qualifying last month, but were rudely ousted by APOEL Nicosia on a late away goal in the tie's second leg.
