After Chivas USA's Erick "El Cubo" Torres, who was named to Mexico's roster for upcoming matches in September, another MLS player has earned himself a surprise international call-up through his play in MLS.
New York Red Bulls left back / left winger Ambroise Oyongo was named to Cameroon's 25-man roster for the first two African Nations Cup group stage qualifiers on Sept. 6 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sept. 10 at home vs. Ivory Coast.
Cameroon manager Volker Finke, who coached the country in a disastrous run at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, listed the 23-year-old Oyongo among the defenders in his squad, which includes several of the country's biggest names across Europe. Captain Samuel Eto'o, however, didn't make the cut.
Oyongo was signed by the Red Bulls on March 7 following a trial in France with Ligue 1 side Lille. He already has international experience with Cameroon, playing for the Under-20 team at the 2011 FIFA Youth World Cup and making his debut for the senior team last July.
The Red Bulls will already be without Tim Cahill for the double FIFA fixture date and Costa Rican left back Roy Miller was also named to Costa Rica's preliminary list for the Copa Centroamericana.
Should all three players report to national team duty, they would miss league matches against Sporting Kansas City (September 6), D.C. United (September 10) and possibly the Sept. 13 matinee vs. Philadelphia depending on the timing of their return.
