Before heading to Brazil, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo helps Real Madrid win UEFA Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Recently crowned Spanish champions Atletico Madrid were seconds away from beating crosstown rivals Real Madrid and adding the UEFA Champions League trophy to their case.

But a dramatic stoppage-time header from Spanish international Sergio Ramos negated Diego Godin's first-half strike, and three goals in extratime saw los Meringues run away with an historic 4-1 victory.

Welsh star Gareth Bale scored the match winner, Brazilian defender Marcelo doubled the lead, and Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo finished it all up.

The title is Real Madrid's 10th European championship.

With the conclusion of the Champions League, the global soccer world's focus now shifts completely to next month's World Cup in Brazil.

Aside from Ronaldo, the Real Madrid side featured several other players who will most likely line up against the US national team in the group stage: Portuguese wingback Fabio Coentrao and German defensive midfielder Sami Khedira. Portuguese defender Pepe was sidelined with an injury and did not see action.
