Goalkeepers are used to being on highlight reels, for saves made and goals conceded. But Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei will be highlighted for all the wrong reasons after mis-judging a bouncing ball at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday night, allowing FC Dallas forward David Texeira to score his first MLS goal as a result.
This is basically the goalkeeper’s version of “The Actor’s Nightmare.” Poor Frei:
Wind and weather have a long history of affecting FC Dallas games and goalkeepers, in particular. Last year, then-Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Steward Céus misjudged a long ball, and ended up finishing a strong second in 2013's Gaffe of the Year voting.
Happily for Frei, Clint Dempsey rode to the rescue with a pair of goals, and forced a Dallas own goal as well, as the Sounders got out of Texas with a 3-2 win.
