GUADALAJARA, Mexico – US forward Daniel Cuevas has moved on loan from Santos Laguna to Mexico second-division outfit Lobos BUAP for next season.
The Under-20 World Cup striker has already met up with his new teammates, which include Texan Marco Vidal and former Chicago Fire forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco.
Cuevas debuted for Santos’ Under-20 side in January 2012, having headed south from Sacramento, Calif., to join the club’s academy. He wasn’t well known on the US soccer scene before his performances at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla earlier this year.
The 20-year-old striker – known as “Cabañitas” after Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabañas – didn’t feature for the first team at Santos, with injuries hampering much of 2013, but was part of the squad that captured Mexico’s U-20 tournament last weekend.
Cuevas’ agent Maximiliano Roditis told MLSsoccer.com recently that he had met with MLS vice president Lino DiCuollo to discuss the futures of both Cuevas and his Santos Laguna teammate Benji Joya, and that the option of moving back north was attractive.
In the end, Roditis explained that the decision to remain in Mexico was partly taken due to the season getting underway in early January, not like March in MLS, and stressed that a future move to MLS is a possibility.
