18. Bill Hamid
Pos: GK | D.C. United | Age: 22
With less talent around him, Hamid’s record hasn’t been very impressive for D.C. United in 2013 and he has dipped eight spots from the 2012 list. Despite United sitting in the MLS cellar most of 2013, the 22-year-old Annandale, Va., native has recorded four clean sheets and made a number of quality stops in keeping his club in games. Hamid has notched one Save of the Week award while being nominated several times in 2013.
What TDs and coaches like: "You have to be mentally strong to be a No. 1 goalkeeper at his age. … He’s coped with a very difficult situation this year after a few more positive seasons. … He makes key saves. ... Extremely athletic. Competitive and courageous. ... He just needs games. Great potential. ... He reminds me a little of [Brad] Guzan. Young guy, got thrown in right away. When you look at Guzan, the first year and he got smashed at Chivas, but that was the best learning tool for him because he matured quick. Look where he’s gone now. ... His best days are ahead of him. ... There was a point when you scratched your head and wondered, ‘Is this guy going to make it?’ I think he’s come through that now, and I think he’s getting more stable. ... Bill’s one of those guys that has a great chance to be the next US men’s national team goalkeeper. He has all the tools. I think he has great potential to be one of the best 'keepers in the country.”
Where TDs and coaches want improvement: "Still needs experience. There's a lot of young-player, young-goalkeeper mistakes. ... He has to learn to make those key saves at even more important moments. … He concedes goals that he shouldn’t be conceding. ... I don’t know where he’ll end up because a lot of goalkeeping is mental. [Being thrown in the fire] could destroy you or it could prepare you moving on. ... He needs to be more consistent. Not giving up a bad goal, a near-post goal, things like that when he makes some of those blunders. If he could knock that stuff out and be consistent, he’s going to keep moving up."
Opta Says: Bill Hamid edges out Zac MacMath (2.9) with 3.0 saves per 90 minutes during the 2013 season, the most among players eligible for 24 Under 24.
