“We believe Jonas will be an important part of our club,” TFC president and GM Kevin Payne said in a club statement. “While he's still young, he has solid European experience and we're pleased to welcome him to Toronto.”

Elmer most recently played for FC Winterthur of the second-tier Swiss Challenge League, where he started in all 21 matches he featured for the club, and scored a goal.

The former Swiss Under-21 national team player started his youth career at Swiss club Grasshopper Club Zürich before joining José Mourinho at Chelsea in 2005. In two seasons with the London club he played regularly for the reserve and youth teams.

Elmer left the English Premier League club in 2007 and proceeded to log time with four different clubs in his native Switzerland (FC Aarau, FC Sion, AC Bellinzona and FC Winterthur).
