Soccer and beer: DC United get their own beer, Sporting KC to host festival | THE SIDELINE

DC United beer

Beer and soccer go as far back together as anyone cares to remember. Whether it's a couple of pints with the boys at the pub in the UK, a cooler full of cold ones at your local MLS tailgate or a plastic cup full of brew at your seat inside the stadium, soccer and beer go hand in hand on game day for many soccer fans.

Well, one MLS club is taking the next step in this soccer and beer marriage. D.C. United announced on Wednesday, in collaboration with DC Brau Brewing Company, LLC, that a D.C. United-specific ale will be unveiled and made available for order in June. It seems that it would pay to partner with a local brewing company whenever possible.

The beer's name is up to an online nomination from the fans, with the United players making the final selection. Anyone can participate in the nomination process by visiting the team's official website. MLSsoccer.com's leading suggestion so far? Greg Lalas' "Marco Etche-beer-y," of course.

Also on Thursday, Sporting Kansas City announced they will be presenting Kansas City Summer Beer Festival for the second straight year. Each person 21 and older – including Jimmy Nielsen, Benny Feilhaber and Seth Sinovic – will have the opprtunity to sample more than 70 exclusive craft beers to benefit AIDS Walk Kansas City.

The two teams face each other at RFK Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in what can now be dubbed The Battle of the Beers. Fear not, there's plenty to go around for everyone.
