Chicago grab UCLA forward with top pick in NWSL draft

One week after each team was allocated the best proven talent from the United States, Canada and Mexico, the eight clubs in the newly formed National Women’s Soccer League dipped into the college ranks on Friday in the league’s inaugural amateur draft.


The Chicago Red Stars grabbed UCLA Zakiya Bywaters forward with the top pick, while her Florida State counterpart Tiffany McCarty went second overall to the Washington Spirit. Boston College midfielder Kristie Lewis went third overall to FC Kansas City, while BYU defender Lindsi Lisonsbee-Cutshall (Sky Blue FC) and Florida state midfielder Casey Short (Boston Breakers) rounded out the top five picks.
