American Exports: Onyewu, Altidore both bag big goals

Jozy Altidore celebrates a goal for AZ Alkmaar

AMSTERDAM – Oguchi Onyewu and Jozy Altidore scored huge goals for their respective clubs on Tuesday in domestic cup competition.

In Spain's Copa del Rey, Onyewu scored deep into stoppage time to give Málaga a 1-1 draw at Eibar and a priceless away goal to carry home for the second leg of their round-of-16 tie.

In addition to a largely solid shift at the back, the two-time World Cup veteran capped his performance by burying a header off a restart near the death for his second goal of the tournament. The teams will reunite at Málaga on Jan. 8 to settle the series.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, Altidore (above) fought off an illness to strike for his side's second as AZ Alkmaar hung on for a 3-2 KNVB Cup victory at second-flight Dordrecht.

In the 25th minute, the power forward collected a long ball in the right channel before skinning two defenders to slot a low, left-footed curler into the far side. It was Altidore's 15th goal across all competitions this term, making him the first American ever to have hit that mark in consecutive top-flight European campaigns.

Over in Germany, Jermaine Jones and Schalke were bounced from the DfB-Pokal with a 2-1 loss to round-of-16 hosts Mainz 05. The US midfielder was among the culpable on the home side's opener and later picked up a yellow card.
