Henry voted MLS Player of the Week for fifth time in 2012

For the second time in three weeks – and the fifth time in 2012 – Thierry Henry has been voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters. (See how the media voted here.)

Henry was simply majestic in a 4-1 rout of Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, assisting on New York's first three goals and then adding an exclamation point with his own classy chip in the win.

The French Designated Player served a corner kick to Markus Holgersson for New York’s first goal, then set up Kenny Cooper twice with gorgeous feeds. Then, in stoppage time, Cooper returned the favor to his strike mate with a through ball to a streaking Henry that the four-time World Cup veteran chipped over Freddy Hall from 25 yards out.

Henry’s 14 goals and 12 assists so far this season give him a hand in nearly half of all the Red Bulls’ total scoring. He’s currently tied for fourth in the Golden Boot race with Robbie Keane and even with Brad Davis and Dwayne De Rosario for fourth among the league’s assist leaders.

With this week's nod, Henry becomes only the third player in MLS history to be voted Player of the Week five times in one season. He joins Cobi Jones, who had a five-peat in 2008, and Jason Kreis, who holds the record with six PotW nods in 1999.

Coming in a close second in this week's voting was Álvaro Saborío, whose hat trick lifted Real Salt Lake to a 4-0 rout at Chivas USA.
