American Exports: Kljestan, Anderlecht hold Milan in CL

AMSTERDAM – A pair of US international hit the road on the opening night of the UEFA Champions League group stage, with Sacha Kljestan contributing a solid shift as Anderlecht held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw at San Siro.

The former Chivas USA man had one of the Mauves' better chances on the night when he forced Milan netminder Christian Abbiati into a sharp diving save in the 12th minute. Kljestan later saw yellow in his second straight Champions League game with 11 minutes remaining.

After Matchday One, Anderlecht stand tied for second in Group C behind Málaga, who humbled Zenit St. Petersburg 3-0 without Oguchi Onyewu.

Also, Jermaine Jones departed in stoppage time after his strong effort helped Schalke score a 2-1 victory at Olympiakos. Mere moments after going into the referee's book, the midfielder notched an "MLS assist" on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 59th-minute winner.

The result puts the Miners joint-top of Group C with Arsenal.

Over in England's Championship, Jonathan Spector continued his fine work in central midfield as warming Birmingham City rose to 11th with a 2-1 defeat of guests Bolton.

Meanwhile, Conor Doyle went unused as ninth place Derby County held on for a 3-2 home win over Charlton.
