Revolution acquire former All-Star Juan Toja via allocation

The New England Revolution already impressive attacking midfield corps just got a little more impressive.

On Monday afternoon, the Revs announced they have acquired former MLS All-Star Juan Toja through the MLS Allocation Process. He officially signed with the league last week.

“We’re pleased to add a player of Juan’s skill and experience through the Allocation Process, and we’re looking forward to getting Juan in with the team as soon as possible,” GM Michael Burns said in a statement. “He’s not only played in MLS and is familiar with the league, but he’s also been very successful in MLS.”

Toja, 27, played the 2007 season and the first half of the 2008 season with FC Dallas, before transferring to Europe. While in Dallas, he became a fan favorite thanks to his well-respected "mullet" hairdo and his attacking flair. He made 43 regular-season appearances for FCD, scoring eight goals and adding three assists.

The Colombian was named an all-star in both 2007 and 2008, and he famously scored a great goal for the MLS All-Star team against Scottish giants Celtic at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in 2007.

In August 2008, Toja move to Romanian side Steaua Bucharest, where he made 51 appearances and scored three goals. During his time with Steaua, Toja made five appearances in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League and eight appearances in the Europa League.

Toja moved to Greece’s Aris Thessaloniki in 2010. In two seasons, he made 37 league appearances and scored one goal. He also made 11 appearances in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League before Aris were knocked out in the round of 32.

Before coming to MLS the first time, Toja spent a season with Argentine powerhouse River Plate, as well as several years with Colombian side Independiente de Santa Fe.

A former Colombian youth international who represented his country at the 2005 U-20 World Cup, Toja has made two appearances for the Colombian  senior team.

It remains to be seen what Toja’s arrival means for the Revolution side. Already boasting talented attack-minded midfielders Lee Nguyen, Benny Feilhaber, and Kelyn Rowe, the Revs now appear to have surplus talent in that position. Last week, the club admitted they had been contacted by several other MLS clubs about a possible trade.
