The Philadelphia Union shored up their central midfield on Wednesday, announcing they’ve signed Panamanian international Gabriel “Gavilán” Gómez.

The 27-year-old Gómez joins the Union after most recently suiting up for Mexican second-division side Indios de Ciudad Juárez. He suited up for Panama during the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup and scored from the penalty spot in the Red Tide’s upset win over the United States in the group stage. He has 74 career caps with Panama, and has scored eight goals since his international debut in February 2003.

Gómez has played professionally on three continents, including a three-year stint with Portuguese side Belenenses beginning in 2007. He also played for Cypriot First Division club Ermis Aradippou in 2010.

He made his professional debut with Colombian First Division side Envigado FC in 2002, and eventually bounced between teams in Panama (San Francisco FC and Tauro FC) and Colombia (Deportivo Pasto, Deportivo Pereira, Independiente Santa Fe) from 2004-06.
