#19. Omar Salgado
Pos: F | Vancouver Whitecaps | Age: 18
The No. 1 pick of the 2011 SuperDraft has not played as often as he would like this year but the Whitecaps consider him a project, as they attempt to mold him into a quick-fire scorer. With nearly 500 minutes of league action, plenty of Reserve League play and the work he has put in with the US Under-20s this year, the experience should serve him well. He already has his first goal out of the way, a memorable header against Columbus (see below).
What the TDs and coaches say: “Good ability. Good feet. Bright future … He’s yet to fill into his body … Big guy who could eventually become a target although he doesn’t play like one. For him to succeed he has to be a target and that means being willing to get kicked and bang bodies … He’s not physical enough for his frame but he’s young. Needs to learn to be more physical … Has a lot of talent but does not have a ton of pace … Needs to have a humble, hard-working attitude if he’s going to excel.”
