American Exports: Spurs fall to Man. Utd in Friedel's debut

Brad Friedel after his Spurs debut, a 3-0 loss to Manchester United

AMSTERDAM — Brad Friedel notched 11 saves in his Tottenham Hotspur debut on Monday, but the visitors eventually succumbed to defending champs Manchester United, 3-0, at Old Trafford.

With Spurs finally opening their season after last weekend's postponement, Friedel dazzled repeatedly in his record 276th consecutive Premier League start. The former US netminder pulled off a series of top stops to deny Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young, Wyane Rooney and Nani.

However, United eventually broke through in the final half-hour thanks to well-executed scoring plays capped by Welbeck, Anderson and Rooney.

Elsewhere, Josh Gatt worked 57 minutes at right back as Molde FK pushed their Norwegian Tippeligaen lead to six points with a 1-0 win over Lillestrøm. With teammate Sean Cunningham watching from the dugout, Gatt spurned a golden chance to score by heading over near the half-hour mark.

Nearby in Denmark's SAS Liga, Chris Rolfe and second-place Aalborg remained unbeaten through six games with a 0-0 home draw against SønderjyskE. The former Chicago Fire man went the distance for AaB, while Conor O'Brien went the final 33 minutes for the visitors.
