Goal of the Matchday

Seattle's Montero narrowly wins AT&T Goal of the Week

Fredy Montero scored the winner for the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

Fredy Montero’s 90th-minute, game-winning free kick against Toronto FC not only sealed a 1-0 victory for 10-man Seattle, but it also took home the AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 14.

Montero bent a magnificent strike around the Toronto wall from 25 yards out that tucked just inside the near post and out of the reach of a diving Stefan Frei. It was the Colombian’s third goal of the campaign, and after being publicly criticized by head coach Sigi Schmid earlier in the season for a lack of production, Montero responded with a brilliant effort that stole three points on the road for the Sounders.

The Seattle forward takes home top honors in a week that saw four of the five nominees garner at least 20 percent of the votes. Montero’s strike, which edged out Vancouver’s Alain Rochat by just a slight margin, received a major boost in the voting after a flurry of text votes were sent in his favor.
