Recap: Late Montero strike edges 10-man Seattle past TFC

Fredy Montero scored the winner for the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

TORONTO — Fredy Montero scored from a 90th-minute free kick to push 10-man Seattle Sounders past Toronto FC before a crowd 21,839 at BMO Field on Saturday.

Toronto were out to avenge the 3-0 drubbing they took on April 30 in Seattle, but instead they collapsed late as Montero hit the upper right corner with a right-footed shot.

TFC, who on Saturday missed the presence up front of injured target man Alan Gordon, have now gone eight MLS matches without a win. For Seattle, the victory marked the first time in the club's history that they have won a game after playing a man down.

The Sounders started the second half with some ambition, but in the 49th minute Jhon Kennedy Hurtado put them down a man after he took a red card for his second caution of the match for a foul on Alen Stevanovic.

But Seattle had the first real chance after the ejection when Mike Fucito’s header from the center of the box missed the top left corner in the 59th minute. Fucito was replaced by Álvaro Fernández in the 69th minute.

With the man advantage, Toronto put some pressure on the visitors. Nick Soolsma forced a save in the 76th minute and Maicon Santos put a header wide and a shot high. Substitute Javier Martina then hit the right post and Joao Plata shot the rebound wide.

Seattle scored an early goal in their win over Toronto in April and had the first chance Saturday in the second minute when Fucito hit the right post with his shot from the left side of the box.

Toronto’s Mikael Yourassowsky was pleading for a penalty in the 11th minute when his attempt on goal was thwarted in the box.

The Sounders' Kasey Keller made the only save by either ‘keeper in the first half on a header from Santos from the center of the box in the 22nd minute.

Toronto did manage to take the game to Seattle in the last part of the first half. Keller knocked away a deflection in the 36th minute off Plata’s attempt from the right of the goal. Then, toward the end of the half, Plata’s shot from outside the box just missed to the left.
