Galaxy's Landon Donovan voted Player of the Month for May

LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan leads MLS with seven goals this season.

He’s away on national team duty, but Landon Donovan is still making news in MLS.

The LA Galaxy’s captain on Friday earned the nod from the North American Soccer Reporters as the MLS Player of the Month for May, leading his club to the top of the Western Conference with a 14-point haul during the month.

In the process, Donovan claimed the momentary lead in the MLS Golden Boot race. His six goals in May launched him to the top of the scoring charts, two goals in front of the chasing pack at the start of June. He scored in four straight matches in May and in five of his club’s seven matches during the month.

After playing every minute in each of the Galaxy’s seven league games in May, Donovan joined the US national team for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks off this weekend. The USA’s all-time leading scorer will be looking for the fourth Gold Cup winner’s medal of his career.
