Canada land tough group draw in FIFA U-17 World Cup

Welcome back, Canada.

In their first participation in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 16 years, Canada will have their work cut out after being drawn on Tuesday into a group headlined by England and Uruguay.

The Canadians will kick off their tournament against the Uruguayans on June 19 in Pachuca, Mexico. Three days later, the Canucks will face England before closing out their group stage on June 25 against Group C’s other team, Rwanda.

Earlier this week, Canada U-17 coach Sean Fleming named a 24-player roster to attend an 11-day camp in Florida ahead of the World Cup. Fleming will use the camp — which runs from Thursday until May 29 — to help determine his final 21-man squad for the tournament.

The Florida training camp features 15 players from the two Canadian MLS academy programs, plus another two players from the youth side of future MLS team Montreal Impact.
