Canada U-17s blown out by Mexico in 2nd friendly

Mexico blew out Canada 3-0 in the second of two U-17 friendlies.

Canada’s Under-17 side dropped the second of two friendly matches against Mexico on Sunday, this one a troubling 3-0 loss in Morelia.

A pair of goals by Jorge Celada and a single tally for Marco Antonio Bueno sunk a Canadian team that featured 10 of the 11 starters that played in February’s CONCACAF Championship final.

The Mexicans went up after just five minutes, with Celeda hitting for his first goal of the match. The Canadians held off their hosts for the rest of the opening frame, with Toronto FC Academy player Keven Aleman testing the Mexico defense on a couple of occasions.

It wasn’t until the 67th minute that El Tri put the game out of reach, with Bueno notching his third goal of the two-game series. The Pachuca prospect scored both Mexican goals in the first friendly between the two sides, a 2-1 victory for the hosts on Wednesday.

Mexico added a third goal through Celada in the 70th minute, when the Atlas forward pounced on a giveaway to complete his brace.

Down 3-0, Canada coach Sean Fleming made wholesale changes, substituting four players in the final quarter hour of action.

Returning to the Canadian starting lineup was defender Daniel Stanese, a Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency member who rejoined the national side after participating in the Dallas Cup Super Group. Club teammate Bryce Alderson, Canada’s captain during the CONCACAF tourney, remained with the junior Whitecaps.
