American Exports: Onyewu fighting through injury

Oguchi Onyewu may join Dutch champs Twente on loan

AMSTERDAM – FC Twente defender Oguchi Onyewu has been named to the provisional squad for Wednesday night's KNVB Cup semifinal against FC Utrecht.

According to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, the US international is nursing a "muscle injury" and the club is expected to give him a late fitness check.

"He has a knock, but it's not serious," Twente press officer Richard Peters told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday afternoon. "He didn't train yesterday, but tonight, we will see at 7:30 if he is in the squad."

Tukkers boss Michel Preud'homme has registered 19 players for the semifinal, one more than the number allowed to dress for the match.

If he plays, Onyewu will slide over from left back to take up his usual central position in place of suspended defender Douglas. The hosts will also be missing Costa Rica wing terror Bryan Ruiz against Utrecht.

On loan from AC Milan through the end of the season, Onyewu has started eight games across all competitions for the defending Eredivisie champs, each to date at either left or right back.
