NEW YORK – The MLS SuperDraft has come and gone, but that doesn't mean that the Generation adidas signings have come to a halt.
Monday's edition of ExtraTime Radio unveiled the latest signing of one of the most highly touted goalkeepers in the college ranks: California's David Bingham.
Bingham became the 11th member of the 2011 Generation adidas class and will learn his fate via a lottery to be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET. He becomes the second GA goalkeeper of 2011 after Maryland’s Zac MacMath, who was selected by the Philadelphia Union in the 2011 SuperDraft.
The New England Revolution have the greatest chance of landing the opportunity pick up Bingham, after D.C. United, Chivas USA and Philadelphia opted out of the lottery process. The Revs hold a 24.6 percent chance of winning the lottery, followed by other entries Toronto (17.9), Chicago (15.3), Seattle (10.8), San Jose (8.8), Columbus (7.1) and New York (5.5). Colorado, FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake, Los Angles, Portland and Vancouver each hold a less than five-percent chance of winning the lottery, while Houston and Kansas City have opted out of the lottery.
If a team lands Bingham in the lottery, they will be precluded from participating in future lotteries during the 2011 MLS season. The lottery mechanism is only used in cases of players signing their first professional contract after the SuperDraft.
During his college career, Bingham was known as an athletic goalkeeper, who was capable of the spectacular save and making the tough play. The 6-foot-2 Bay Area native was a 2010 NSCAA All-American as a junior, registering eight shutouts in 20 matches (including NCAA tournament) and allowing more than one goal on only four occasions. The performances have earned comparisons to former Cal and current Toronto FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Bingham will become the sixth Cal rookie in MLS in 2011, joining former teammates Servando Carrasco (Seattle Sounders), Hector Jimenez (LA Galaxy), Demitrius Omphroy (Toronto FC), Davis Paul (Chicago Fire) and A.J. Soares (New England Revolution).
