TFC's de Guzman undergoes knee surgery

Julian de Guzman (Toronto, 2009-)

TORONTO—Toronto FC confirmed that midfielder Julian de Guzman underwent minor surgery this off-season. The surgery targeted a damaged meniscus which had bothered him for the last two of 2010.

However, the club dismissed reports that the injury will sideline him.

“He’s expected back for the start of training camp,” new head coach Aron Winter said.

Player personnel head Paul Mariner said that he expected de Guzman to play a significant role for Toronto in 2011. The new management team will be meeting with him over the next couple weeks before Toronto flies to Turkey to open camp.

With plans to move Toronto to a style similar to the "Total Football" employed by the Dutch and Winter’s former club Ajax Amsterdam, a player of de Guzman’s experience and pedigree will be vital to Toronto’s success.
