D.C. United acquire Craig Thompson

WASHINGTON, DC - D.C. United announced today the club has acquired midfielder Craig Thompson from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for a fourth round natural selection in the 2010 supplemental draft. Thompson has signed a developmental contract with the Black-and-Red and will be available for selection in tomorrow night's U.S. Open Cup match with the Rochester Rhinos. Tickets for the game, set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md, are available at www.DCUnited.com, by calling 202-587-5000 or at the gate.

Thompson joins United having been drafted by Houston in the second round (28th overall selection) of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft. He is the only player from the program to have ever been selected in an MLS draft. A 5'8", 160-lb. midfielder from Littleton, Colo., Thompson garnered NSCAA/adidas First Team All-Midwest Region honors and was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Player of the Year and Academic Player of the Year following his senior season last fall at the Colorado School of Mines. He led the Orediggers and established a new individual single-season program record with 18 goals in 2007. Thompson, who also led Mines in assists (tied - five) and game-winning goals (four) last fall, tied CSM's individual single-season program record for total points (41) during his final season in an Oredigger uniform. A three-time Academic All-RMAC performer in the classroom (2005, 2006 and 2007), Thompson also garnered First Team All-RMAC, NSCAA / adidas Second Team All-Midwest Region and Daktronics All-Midwest Region laurels as a junior in 2006.
