Cannon named MLS Player of the Week

Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Joe Cannon recorded two shutouts during Week 25 of the regular season and was named MLS Player of the Week for his performances in leading the Rapids to a 1-0-1 record.

Cannon, a nine-year MLS veteran, recorded five saves in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, Sept. 13 and he recorded three saves in his second consecutive shutout - a 0-0 tie versus the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Cannon's performances in net during Week 25 helped the Rapids keep pace in the hunt for an MLS Cup playoff berth. The Rapids currently sit tied in points (39) for third place in the Western Conference with Chivas USA, but are behind in the tie-breaker. The second place Houston Dynamo are only one point ahead of Chivas USA and the Rapids. Real Salt Lake have 39 points, only three behind Chivas USA and Colorado. Each Western Conference team has four regular season games remaining.

In his fourth year with Colorado, Cannon has recorded seven shutouts this season and has a 1.47 goals against average and a 9-9-5 record. Cannon was a member of the 2006 MLS All-Star team and helped preserve a 1-0 victory over Chelsea FC with a superb second-half performance in the match. He has twice been named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and this is his fourth career Player of the Week selection.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
