At Crew Stadium, even though it was from the penalty spot, the home side finally found the back of the net after some more bad luck while keeping the Rapids winless on their travels.
The Crew hit the woodwork on either side of halftime -- Kyle Martino having a shot deflect off the base of the left post before the interval and Cornell Glen a header glance off the post after the break.
But 20 minutes from the end Mario Rodriguez was tripped up from behind by Ritchie Kotschau as he burst into the Colorado penalty area, and Glen cleanly converted from the spot for the match-winner, the Crew's first goal in exactly 300 minutes. For the Rapids, it was their sixth loss in seven matches on the road, and they've still scored just once away from home.
At Giants Stadium, it took a remarkable effort from MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells to keep D.C. United off the board as the first Atlantic Cup clash ended without goals.
Wells was credited with 14 saves on the day -- one shy of the MLS record -- as United outshot the MetroStars 28-8. The league record is 15 saves -- also set in a MetroStars-United contest, by Tony Meola in a 2-1 United victory on April 5, 1997.
Wells made three top-drawer saves on United striker Alecko Eskandarian, all after he had come on as a halftime substitute, as the D.C. attacker was still kept without a goal to his name this season.
In Carson, Calif., on Sunday, Chivas USA saw their winless run extend to seven matches, but still came back to claim a second draw with the Earthquakes on the season.
A quick counter-attack gave the visitors the lead just before the end of the first half. Dwayne De Rosario hit a ball over the Chivas back three and Alejandro Moreno raced to collect it before sliding it past Brad Guzan in the Chivas goal (40).
But after some intense pressure, Chivas finally leveled the match when Ramon Ramirez's pinpoint cross from the left was turned home at the back post by Ezra Hendrickson (66). Chivas had twice hit the post -- a clear header from Isaac Romo and a powerful free kick from Francisco Mendoza -- though the 'Quakes had one of their own come off the woodwork when Mark Chung's header hit the bar. San Jose then had an apparent stoppage-time match-winner from De Rosario controversially ruled out for offside.
