Reserves: United 4, Crew 1

The Columbus Crew Reserves suffered a 4-1 defeat to the D.C. United Reserves on Sunday morning, July 3, at The Crew training facility in Obetz. The bad luck started early in the game for The Crew when Stephen Armstrong's penalty kick was saved by D.C. United goalkeeper Troy Perkins in the sixth minute.

The streak continued, when a mere 12 minutes later D.C. United midfielder Freddy Adu was taken down by Crew goalkeeper Bill Gaudette in the box and awarded a penalty kick. After missing two penalty kicks for the U-20 National Team during the World Youth Championship in Holland, Adu redeemed himself by sliding one past Gaudette to make it a 1-0 game.

A 28th minute goal by forward Matt Nickell gave D.C. a 2-0 lead over Columbus going into the half. D.C. came out strong after halftime, with guest player Eric Quill scoring the third goal just seconds into second half play (46th minute).

A Jamal Sutton goal in the 57th minute, his sixth of the year, pulled Columbus to within two. However, it was D.C. United who put up the final tally with a Matthew Nickell goal in the 80th minute.

Today's game dropped Columbus to 3-3-2 in the Reserve Division, while D.C. improved to 5-2-0 and moved into first place in the standings.
