Moreno earns Goal of the Week honors

Jaime Moreno

NEW YORK - Jaime Moreno's goal at the end of a 40-yard run that gave D.C. United a 1-0 victory over the visiting Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night was voted by fans as the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week for the week ending May 15, 2004 (Week 7). The 30-year old is the League's fourth all-time points leader and ranks sixth all-time with 73 goals. Moreno's two goals this year have come in both of United's wins. He becomes the third D.C. United forward to earn the honor this season after Alecko Eskandarian (Week 1) and Ronald Cerritos (Week 2).

The weekly Goal of the Week winner is determined from a selection of finalists through a fan vote conducted on the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week section of Major League Soccer's official web site: www.MLSnet.com.Click here to see the goal.

With 37 percent of the vote, the nine-year MLS veteran narrowly edged out MetroStars forward Fabian Taylor, who received 36 percent of the ballots. The other forwards receiving votes for their goals were San Jose Earthquakes striker Brian Ching, the Colorado Rapids' Jean Philippe Peguero and Eddie Johnson of the Dallas Burn.

Moreno, a former Bolivian international who is United's all-time leading scorer, took off on a weaving run through the heart of the Kansas City defense in the 75th minute before hitting the back of the net from just inside the area.

"He's a very special player," United Head Coach Peter Nowak said after the game. "It was a very special play."

The vintage run from Moreno began when he collected the ball just beyond the center stripe and set off on a 40-yard run down the middle of the Wizards' half. At the top of the area he cut back inside defender Jimmy Conrad and hit a perfectly placed shot inside goalkeeper Tony Meola's left post for the match-winner.

"I saw the defender in front of me and just dribbled to the outside to see what would open up," Moreno said. "I had a couple of seconds to think and I never thought of anything but the goal. I was just hoping to score."

Streaming video highlights and goals from MLS games are available for viewing every weekend on MLSnet.com just hours after the conclusion of the final match of the weekend. The Sierra Mist Goal of the Week winner is announced the following Wednesday.

At the end of the regular season, each of the 29 Goal of the Week winners selected throughout the season will be featured in voting for the Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Year, an award presented annually to the author of the season's most spectacular scoring play. The Sierra Mist Goal of the Year award will be presented at the annual Gala Awards ceremony in the days leading up to MLS Cup 2004.
