CREW DOWNS THE CINCINNATI KINGS, 3-0, IN KEITH EVANS MEMORIAL MATCH
The Crew defeated the Cincinnati Kings (USL Second Division), 3-0, last Tuesday, March 15, in the annual Keith Evans Memorial match at The Crew Training Center at Obetz. Edson Buddle and Ante Razov scored in the first half with rookie Marcus Storey adding a goal in the second half.
2005 SIERRA MIST MLS ALL-STAR GAME SET FOR COLUMBUS ON JULY 30
Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber and Crew General Manager Mark McCullers announced on March 8 that the MLS All-Stars will face Brian McBride and English Premier League club Fulham FC in the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game to be played on Saturday, July 30, in Columbus Crew Stadium (live on ABC Sports at 3:30 p.m. ET).
Crew Soccer Nation members (season ticket holders) will get a priority offer to purchase All-Star tickets before they go on sale to the general public. The on-sale date for the general public will be announced in the near future. For more information call 614-447-CREW.
U.S.-MEXICO RETURNS TO CREW STADIUM ON SEPTEMBER 3
Columbus Crew General Manager Mark McCullers, in conjunction with U.S. Soccer, announced on March 9 that Columbus Crew Stadium will be the site for the U.S.-Mexico World Cup Qualifying match on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The game will be shown live on ESPN Classic and Telemundo.
Ticketing details will be announced at a later date, but Crew Soccer Nation Members (season ticket holders) will receive a priority offer to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the general public.
MARSHALL GOES FULL 90 IN 1-0 U.S. WIN OVER HONDURAS,
MARSHALL AND BUSCH REMAIN WITH NATIONAL TEAM
Crew defender Chad Marshall played the full 90 minutes in the U.S.'s 1-0 win over Honduras on Saturday, March 19, in Albuquerque, N.M. It was Marshall's second consecutive appearance for the U.S. National Team, after making his U.S. debut and scoring his first U.S. goal on March 9 vs. Colombia in a 3-0 U.S. win. Crew midfielder Kyle Martino came on as substitute in the 63rd minute vs. Honduras.
Marshall and Crew goalkeeper Jon Busch remain with the national team as they continue preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mexico on March 27 and Guatemala three days later, on March 30. Frankie Hejduk and Martino have returned to Crew camp.
Kickoff for the March 27 match vs. Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City is set for 1 p.m. ET, while the game vs. Guatemala is set for 8 p.m. ET on March 30 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.
The U.S. will play 10 games in the final round of qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup from Feb. 9 - Oct. 13, 2005. The USA, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago are competing for three automatic berths to the World Cup finals in Germany. The fourth-place finisher will face the fifth-place team from the Asian Football Confederation in a home-and-home series to determine the last entrant into the tournament. The U.S. opened final round play with a 2-1 victory in Trinidad on Feb. 9.
U.S. UNDER-20 NATIONAL TEAM, INCLUDING CREW MIDFIELDER DANNY SZETELA, OPENS SUWON INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT WITH STUNNING 2-1 WIN OVER ARGENTINA
The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team, including Crew midfielder Danny Szetela, opened the Suwon International Youth Football Tournament in Suwon, South Korea (March 22-26) with a stunning 2-1 win over Argentina today (March 22). Kamani Hill was the hero as the second-half substitute buried a breakaway in the final moments of the game to give the U.S. the win.
The Under-20s will also play Egypt and South Korea in the four-team tournament that runs from March 22-26, and serves as preparation for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland from June 10-July 2.
The U.S. continues the round-robin tournament against host South Korea on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. local time (5 a.m. ET), before concluding play against Egypt on Saturday, March 26, at 12:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. ET on Friday, March 25). All of the matches in the tournament will be played at Suwon World Cup Stadium, the location of the Senior U.S. Men's National Team's historic 3-2 upset of Portugal in their opening match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
