Crew 1, Earthquakes 0: quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2004 - COLUMBUS CREW 1, SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 0

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On game:
"This one hurts. We should have had some goals tonight, but we just could not finish our chances. We are playing well enough right now, but we are not scoring the goals we need to. There is no question that we created more chances tonight. It is frustrating, and I think the whole team is frustrated right now."

On the Quakes rebounding with a key Western Conference game against Los Angeles on Saturday:
"We have to win. We know that this is going to go down to the wire, and now we have six games left that are very important. It is going to come down to these last six games and we have to win these important games."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER TROY DAYAK

On the game:
"If we had finished our open chances, chances that we normally put away, then we don't have to worry about the end of the game like that. It is just a bad way to lose."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER BRIAN MULLAN

On the game:
"I thought it was a bit rough in the first half, but we had our chances. I had some myself that I should have done better with. There is not a lot for me to say, this is just a tough loss."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD CHRIS BROWN

On the Quakes rebounding from loss:
"The good thing is that we have a quick turnaround. We have a chance really quickly to get back against L.A. and play better and pull out a win. We know what we need to do there."

COLUMBUS CREW HEAD COACH GREG ANDRULIS

On the game:
"It was a very good three points for us. San Jose is a very good team and Spartan Stadium is a difficult place to play. To get a shutout at San Jose means your defense is playing well. We gave ourselves a chance to win at the end and a couple of our big guys stepped up and made a play. It's a quality feeling to get a win like this and to go into a break with a three points on the road."

On the game-winner:
"We have some guys who can do some damage on set pieces and adding Tony (Sanneh) to the mix is another weapon. Simon (Elliott) served a great ball in the box and it was a little surprising that it made it all the way to Tony's foot but he knew what to do with it."

COLUMBUS CREW MIDFIELDER TONY SANNEH

On the goal:
"It was a good ball from Simon and I was able to put myself in a good position to get on the end of it."

On the win:
"It was another good win for us. We battled all night. San Jose is a good team but we kept working hard and were able to capitalize at the end."

COLUMBUS CREW MIDFIELDER SIMON ELLIOTT

On being in first place in the East:
"It's nice to be in first but they don't give out trophies in September. It doesn't mean a whole lot at the moment and they guys know it."

On the team's performance of late:
"We are starting to find out what our potential is, but we're not there yet."

On the game-winner:
"If you get a good service, and you get good runs, good things will happen."

On the persistence of the Crew throughout the game:
"We are able to capitalize late in the game like this because we are putting ourselves in that position. We are playing good defense and not conceding goals and that allows us to have opportunities to win games like this."
