Career Summary

The versatile Costa Rican defender Michael Umaña, joins Chivas USA from Costa Rican club Liberia Mia. Born on July 16, 1982, Umaña made his professional debut in the Costa Rican First Division with CS Herediano in 2005, joining the LA Galaxy later that year. After a one-year stint with the Galaxy, Umaña returned to Costa Rica where he played with CS Herediano, Brujas and his latest club Liberia Mia. Umaña made several appearances for the Costa Rican youth teams, playing in tournaments like the 2004 Summer Olympics, and later became an important part of the full national team, and played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

MLS Experience
2005: Umaña made his MLS debut when he joined the LA Galaxy from CS Herediano. He made 15 appearances with the Galaxy and then returned to Costa Rica to join club Brujas.

Other Pro Experience
Umaña, made his professional debut with CS Herediano from the Costa Rican First Division side in 2005. After returning to Costa Rica from a one-year stint with the LA Galaxy, Umaña would join club Brujas, where he would make 11 appearances and score one goal. Umaña joined CS Herediano in 2006, where he made 38 apperances. In 2007, Umaña joined Liberia Mia where he appeared in 67 matches (64 starts) and four goals.

On the international level, Umaña has 40 appearances with the Costa Rican National Team and was part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. After notching a spot in the international tournament, Umaña was a member of the final roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Umaña also played with the national youth teams in 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece.
