A powerful box-to-box midfielder who is strong on the tackle, Jones is an experienced player who boasts extensive experience in the German Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and at the international level with the United States. Though his appearances have been limited by injury and suspension, his dynamism in the middle of the field was key first to the New England Revolution's run to the MLS title game in 2014 and then to the Colorado Rapids' runner-up finish in the 2016 Supporters' Shield race.

OUTSIDE MLS: Played 14 professional seasons, all in Europe, before joining the Galaxy. Jones began his career in 2000 with Eintracht Frankfurt and spent four seasons playing regularly with the club before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in July 2004. He was loaned back to Frankfurt in January 2005 and eventually re-signed with the club. In July 2007, Jones signed with Schalke, where he stayed through the end of the 2013 calendar year, save for a six-month loan stint with England's Blackburn Rovers in the first half of 2011. While with Schalke, Jones made 185 appearances across league, cup and European play, scoring 17 goals in the process. Before joining MLS with the New England Revolution in summer 2014, Jones spent six months with Turkish club Besiktas, for whom he made 10 appearances.

INTERNATIONAL: Has 69 caps with the US national team as of March 28, 2017. Has scored four goals. Became eligible to represent the US after his documentation was approved by FIFA on Oct. 20, 2009, following his petition to switch from representing Germany, for whom he made three appearances in . Made his US debut on Oct. 9, 2010, against Poland in Chicago. Started all four of the US matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and scored his first World Cup goal against Portugal (June 22) which leveled the game in the 64th minute.
