ACQUIRED: Selected by the Timbers in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the MLS SuperDraft 2025. Signed on January 31, 2025, to a one year contract, Portland holds club options in 2026, 2027, and 2028. On November 14, 2025, the Timbers excersised their 2026 option on Smith, keeping him in Green and Gold through at least 2026.

2025: Made first MLS postseason appearance against SD on Oct. 26... Registered his first assist of the regular season at LAFC on July 25... Scored his first professional goal against NE on July 5... Recorded his first assist for Portland in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 match against Tacoma Defiance on May 6... Earned his first start in Portland’s match against Austin FC on March 1, tallying a shutout win... Made MLS and professional debut in home opener against Vancouver on Feb. 23 as a second half substitute.

COLLEGE: The Timbers selected defender Ian Smith from the University of Denver in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the MLS SuperDraft 2025. Smith started in all 61 appearances during his four-year career at University of Denver (2021-2024), tallying six goals and 21 assists for the Pioneers. The Littleton, Colorado native ranked 57 in the 2024 Top Drawer Soccer’s Midseason Top 100 list, as well as seventh in the country with most assists with 10 (2024). Notably, Smith served as captain for the Pioneers in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
