MLS Highlights


2009: The Galaxy’s vice captain, Lewis appeared in 27 games for the Galaxy in 2009, which were the third most on the team,
 while making 23 starts and helping LA to a 9-4-10 record in those contests. His first full season with the club, Lewis had two goals and helped lead the team to their first Western Conference Championship since 2005. He missed the season opener through injury, but made his 2009 debut on 4/4, starting and playing 77 minutes at left back. He scored his first goal of the season on 5/17, when he celebrated his 35th birthday by scoring the game-tying goal in second half stoppage time of the 1-1 draw vs. Columbus. He picked up his first assist of the season a week later, setting up Landon Donovan’s early goal in a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas on 5/23. He got his second assist of the year on 6/6 when Alan Gordon headed home a Lewis corner kick in a 2-1 win at Toronto FC. He had a goal and an assist, each in the first half, of the Galaxy’s 3-1 win at New York on 7/16 before adding another assist at New England on 8/8, setting up Jovan Kirovski’s game-winning goal. He played the 150th game of his MLS career in the regular season finale against San Jose on 10/24. In the postseason, Lewis appeared in three games as the Galaxy reached MLS Cup. Those were his first MLS Cup Playoff games since the league’s inaugural season in 1996.
 


2008: Returned to MLS when he signed with the Galaxy on 8/21, scoring one goal and adding two assists in eight games for the club. He registered an assist in his first game for the club, setting up Landon Donovan’s second goal in the 2-2 draw at New England on 8/30. He scored his first goal for the club in the 3-1 loss at Chicago on 9/25, tying the score at 1-1 late in the first half. He added an assist in the season finale against FC Dallas, setting up Edson Buddle for the game’s opening goal.
 


1999: Was named to the MLS Best XI squad after tallying a career-high with four goals and tying a career-high with 14 assists, in his final season with the San Jose Clash (now Earthquakes). He appeared in 29 of his teams’ 32 games, starting all 29 and playing 2,546 minutes, which were the third most on the team. He recorded a career-high three assists in a 6-1 win over Miami on 9/19.
 


1998: Appeared in and started all 32 games for San Jose, playing 2,835, which were the most on the team, while tallying three goals and four assists. Recorded the only multi-goal game of his MLS career when he scored twice in a 4-3 loss to the MetroStars on 4/25. He had two of his four assists in a 3-0 win over the eventual MLS Cup champion Chicago Fire on 7/29.
 


1997: Started 26 of the 29 games in which he appeared for San Jose, scoring twice and adding a team-best 14 assists. He scored the first goal of his MLS career in the second half of a shootout loss to Tampa Bay on 7/13 and added a goal against the Galaxy in a 3-2 loss on 9/21. He tallied the first three multi-assist games of his career, notching two assists against LA (4/12), Dallas (6/28) and New England (8/3), with San Jose going 3-0 in those matches.
 


1996: Was drafted by San Jose in the third round (23rd overall) of the 1996 MLS College Draft and appeared in 25 games for the club as a rookie. He started 13 contests and tallied three assists on the season, including the first assist of his MLS career on 5/18 in a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.


Career Highlights


2007-08: Spent one season with Derby County in the English Premier League, appearing in 27 games in all competitions for the Rams.
 


2005-07: Lewis joined Leeds United in June 2005 on a free transfer and immediately found success with the club, helping Leeds back to the brink of the Premier League. He scored in the first leg of the Playoff semifinal against Preston North End as Leeds booked a place in the Playoff Final. The following season, he was named the Leeds United Player of the Year, making him the fourth non-British player to claim the award.
 


2002-05: He joined Preston North End of the English First Division prior to the start of the 2002-03 season and immediately became a fan favorite at Deepdale. He played in more than 100 games for the club in three seasons. In his final season with the club, Lewis helped Preston reach the Playoff Final, only to lose 1-0 to West Ham and miss out on promotion to the Premier League.
 


2000-02: Was signed by Fulham of the English First Division after the completion of 1999 MLS season. He spent three seasons at Craven Cottage, helping the club reach the Premiership for the first time during the 2001-02 season. He made his Premier League debut, playing in the club’s away loss to Blackburn that season. He scored his first goal for the club in a Fourth Round League Cup win over Derby County on 11/29/2000.
 


National Team


Has made 82 appearances with the U.S. National Team, scoring 10 goals and adding 16 assists. He scored his first goal for the National Team on 2/21/99 in a 2-1 win against Chile in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He appeared at both the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, appearing in five game and making four starts at those two tournaments. He assisted on Landon Donovan’s goal against Mexico in the Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup, helping the U.S. reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1930. He appeared in nine games for the U.S. in 2008 when he tied a career-high with two goals. He had a career-best five assists in 2003 and is now fourth all-time for the U.S. with 16 assists. He has played a part in World Cup Qualifying ahead of the 2002, 2006 and 2010 tournaments, appearing in 21 qualifiers, which are tied for the ninth most is U.S. history.
 


 

College Highlights


Played four years (1992-95) at UCLA and helped the Bruins to a 67-14-4 record during his time in Westwood. He scored 30 goals and added 28 assists in his time with the team, while helping them reach the NCAA Tournament in all four of his years there. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1992 and was a Soccer News All-American as a junior and senior. As a junior in 1994, he tallied a hat trick in a 5-1 win at Davidson and was a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club award given to the nation’s top player.
