A Spanish defender of real pedigree, Mateos was a midseason acquisition in Orlando City's expansion year. Mateos will hope to settle in and earn a starting spot in 2016, after getting a taste of MLS action in 2015.
OUTSIDE MLS: Mateos climbed the ranks through Real Madrid’s youth system for nearly seven years, even playing alongside City captain Kaká, before moving to the Hungarian side Ferencvárosi in 2013. The defender made 40 appearances for the most popular soccer team in Hungary, and scored seven goals. He helped Ferencvárosi TC qualify for the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League, after the club finished second in the 2014-15 Hungarian League. Previously, the Spaniard spent the 2011-12 season on loan with AEK Athens in Greece and Real Zaragoza in Spain.
