Career Summary

Contract expired following 2017 season.

Alston is a speedy, athletic, explosive fullback (mainly a right back who has also featured at left back) whose strength lies in the defensive cover he provides, sticking with the fastest wide attackers in the league. He was drafted by the New England Revolution -- 10th overall in 2009 -- and spent a total of seven seasons in Foxborough before the club decided to decline his contract option at the end of 2015. He was diagnosed in April 2013 with a treatable version of leukemia and battled back to return to the squad just five months later.

INTERNATIONAL: Doesn't have a cap with the senior US team, but he was called up for 2010 January camp and again ahead of the team’s friendly against El Salvador that same year. He formed part of US Soccer’s Residency Program and the Under-17 national team (17 caps, including three starts at the 2005 U-17 FIFA World Cup) from September 2003 through his enrollment at Indiana in January 2006. He also represented the USA at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil (2007).

COLLEGE: Played left back for college soccer power Indiana University, making 64 appearances in three seasons (61 starts). Helped lead Indiana to NCAA Tournament berths in all three years. A two-time All-Big Ten selection (2007, 2008). He left Indiana after his junior season to sign a Generation adidas contract with MLS.

NOTES: Alston was a 2010 MLS All-Star and 2013 MLS WORKS Comeback Player of the Year for returning from a battle against chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) ... His uncle, Mitchell Johnson, played in the NFL for the Rams, Cowboys and Redskins in the 1960s and early 70s.
