RSL MF Andy Williams Called into Jamaican National Team for World Cup Qualifiers

Real Salt Lake MF Andy Williams today was named to the Jamaican National Team squad that will begin the island nation's march towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a pair of CONCACAF region qualifiers against the Bahamas next week. Williams will depart Salt Lake City on Thursday for Jamaica, where the "Reggae Boyz" and the Bahamas will square off in a pair of contests on Sunday, June 15, at Independence Park in Kingston and Wednesday, June 18, at Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny. The victor of that series will advance to CONCACAF's semifinal round of qualifying, which will be contested in a home-and-away, round-robin format featuring three groups of four teams, with the top two squads in each group advancing to the final round.

The 30-year-old Williams ended his two-year retirement from international soccer last Tuesday, when he played the full 90 minutes for Jamaica in its 5-1 victory over St. Vincent & the Grenadines in Kingston. That game marked Williams' 83rd appearance for the Reggae Boyz since making his debut in 1998, which is when newly-reappointed Jamaica head coach Rene Simoes led the squad to its lone World Cup appearance in France. During his absence, Williams will miss Real Salt Lake's next two contests - this Saturday's road match at Chivas USA and next Wednesday's contest at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.

RSL Rewind: 'Keepers Come to Forefront in Scoreless Draw against Wizards

Real Salt Lake stayed undefeated at home for the 2008 campaign but went without the three point result it was looking for last Saturday after settling for a 0-0 draw with the Kansas City Wizards at Rice-Eccles Stadium. After the visiting Wizards (3-4-3, 12 pts.) enjoyed the run of play in the first 20 minutes, Real Salt Lake (3-5-3, 12 pts.) regrouped to put a barrage of shots on goal before the halftime break, but Kansas City GK Kevin Hartman was up to the task, making five of his seven saves in the first stanza en route to his MLS career-best 71st clean sheet. Not to be outdone was RSL netminder Nick Rimando, who was not tested as often but came up big in the 89th minute, diving fully to his right to knock wide a shot from distance by Wizards MF Kerry Zavagnin that preserved his 45th career shutout, good for sixth place on MLS's career chart in the category.
