Weekly update: Celebration hits finale

With a match at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night in The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA will conclude the Centenary celebrations in Southern California for Club Deportivo Guadalajara. On display at Saturday's match will be trophies from Chivas de Guadalajara's championship seasons and the game will end with a fireworks display that will be the grand finale for the Centenary celebrations. On August 6, 92,650 fans came out to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for a doubleheader featuring Chivas USA vs. New England Revolution and Chivas Guadalajara vs. FC Barcelona of Spain. On the heels of that event came the historic 100-Hour Soccer Game, the longest match on record in the United States, featuring teams from Chivas and the Rest of the World.


KANSAS CITY FINISHES CRAZY WEEK IN LOS ANGELES: With three games in six days, the Kansas City Wizards have a busy week ahead. On Monday night the Wizards fell 2-0 to the Chicago Fire in a rescheduled U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round match, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals of the competition. A league match on Wednesday is the next item on the schedule for Kansas City, facing the Fire again in Chicago, in an Eastern Conference clash. After training in Chicago on Thursday, the Wizards fly to Los Angeles and train on the Track Field in The Home Depot Center on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. The busy week will be a test for the high-flying Wizards, who are coming off a 4-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.


100-HOUR SOCCER GAME A SUCCESS: Chivas, the 'Fundación Chivas de Corazón USA' and the City of Bell Gardens have successfully concluded the '100-Hour Soccer Game', the longest on record in the United States. The event took place at the new Bell Gardens Sports Center, and featured two teams of rotating players; in the end, Chivas defeated the Rest of the World by a final score of 437 to 429. The match, which commemorated the 100 year history of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, featured a number of celebrities and former professional players, as well as Chivas owners Jorge Vergara and Antonio Cué. VOTE FOR 'LOCO' GARCÍA FOR GOAL OF THE WEEK: In the 77th minute of Saturday's game against Chicago, Jonathan Bornstein found Juan Pablo García unmarked at the top of the box, and the crafty midfielder turned and fired a laser into the top corner of the net to give Chivas USA a 1-0 lead. The incredible strike has earned 'Loco' García a nomination for MLS 'Goal of the Week.' GUADALAJARA UPDATE: In its second game of the Apertura season in Mexico, Chivas de Guadalajara captured a 3-1 victory over Santos in the Estadio Jalisco. Omar Bravo scored twice for the hosts, who now have a win and a loss on the young season. Sergio Santana also scored for Chivas, and Alberto Medina had two assists on the day. The next match for the Red-and-White is on Saturday, August 19 when the team travels to face Pachuca.
