Vancouver Whitecaps FC have added depth to their defense, announcing on Thursday the signing of Justin Fiddes. The deal is for the 2018 season with options through 2021.

Fiddes, 22, begins his professional career after being selected by the Whitecaps in the first round, 17th overall, in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

"Justin is a young, fast, and athletic fullback who has shown promise in preseason camp with the team," said head coach Carl Robinson in a team statement. "He's got a great attitude and has the willingness to learn and work, and it will be good to officially add him to the mix and challenge the other guys."

The San Diego native played collegiately for four years at the University of Washington, making 70 appearances, and scoring a goal and 10 assists. His senior season, he was given All-Pac 12 Conference Honorable Mention and was selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Second Team.

The Whitecaps next face the Houston Dynamo on the road on Saturday in MLS regular season play (6 pm ET | TSN1/4; MLS LIVE in US).
