DeAndre Yedlin got the start at left back and played 60 minutes in Tottenham Hotspur's International Champions Cup game against Atletico Madrid at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia on Friday. He got to start alongside another American international, 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers, the captain of Spurs' U-21 side who has played for the US U-18, U-20 and U-23 teams.
For Yedlin, normally a right back for both Spurs and the US national team, left back is a new position for him with Spurs, and could add to his value to the team in the mind of manager Mauricio Pochettino. Yedlin struggled to get playing time after he was transferred to Tottenham from Seattle Sounders FC in January, 2015, and ended up being loaned to Sunderland last season. There he emerged as a favorite of manager Sam Allardyce and helped that team stave off relegation and remain in the Premier League. Yedlin has been linked all summer with a potential return to Sunderland, but with Allardyce's departure from Sunderland to take over as manager of England, and David Moyes replacing him as the Black Cats' manager, it is unknown what that means for Yedlin.
In the meantime, with Tottenham seemingly well-stocked at right back, with Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier splitting time there last season, if Yedlin can show himself capable of playing on the left side, that may be a way for him to get more regular playing time in North London.
