Union and Sounders fans have new MLS club license plate options | THE SIDELINE

Philadelphia Union license plate

A simple bumper sticker or car magnet used to be the hippest way of showing support for your favorite sports team while riding around town in your vehicle of choice. As soon as fellow drivers saw that sticker in the back window denoting your love of the local MLS team, they knew they were in the presence of a true fan.

Well, a new trend is beginning to emerge for MLS fans who wish to display their fandom on their car. And this one won't fade, peel off on the corners or crack.

First it was the Philadelphia Union on Monday of last week, and then the Seattle Sounders on Friday, that each announced they have created officially licensed, state-registered license plates in partnership with their respective state departments.

Proceeds from fans who purchase either of the clubs' plates go to charity. Union fans will be benefitting to the Philadelphia Union Foundation, and Sounders fans to InvestED — both charities with the betterment of children's lives stated as their main goal.

NOTE: Other MLS teams, including D.C. United, Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew, have all made the leap into acquiring official state license plates as well.

No truth to the rumor that the Sounders license plate will serve as a legal alternative to headlights.
