Transfer Watch: New York Red Bulls close in on reported Barcelona target Gideon Baah as Matt Miazga replacement

Transfer Rumors

The New York Red Bulls may have found a replacement for Matt Miazga, with a Finnish outlet reporting on Monday that the club is close to signing 24-year-old Ghanaian center back Gideon Baah.

Finnish publication Urhueilu reported on Monday that HJK had accepted a transfer offer from FC Barcelona’s B team for Baah, but that the proposed deal with the Spanish giants fell through in the final stages. The outlet also reported that the Red Bulls swooped in after the Barca deal went off the table, and that New York have agreed with HJK on a transfer fee for Baah.

Miazga officially left New York on Saturday, when the 20-year-old Red Bulls academy product completed his transfer to English Premier League powerhouse Chelsea.

Baah has spent the last three years playing in Finland’s top flight, appearing 29 times for FC Honka in the 2013 season before moving to HJK Helsinki early in 2014. He’s played a total of 41 league matches in two seasons with HJK, helping the team to the 2014 Veikkausliiga and Suomen Cup titles and the 2015 League Cup crown.

He also has extensive experience in European competitions, appearing in seven UEFA Champions League matches with HJK and in nine Europa League contests during his time in Finland. Baah has one cap with the Ghanaian national team, coming on for the final 31 minutes of the Black Stars’ 1-1 draw against Canada at RFK Stadium last October.
