On Friday the 13th, it is the return of Jason!

Veteran center back Jason Hernandez is back in Toronto, signing with Toronto FC, the club announced on Friday.

The 34-year-old made 10 combined appearances across all competitions for both TFC and Toronto FC II a year ago. He signed as a free agent on March 21, 2017, but his option was declined following the treble-winning season.

Hernandez, who has played for five teams over the course of 13 seasons, is brought in because of a need for defensive depth, especially for league matches against Colorado Rapids and Houston Dynamo that fall before and during the two legs of the Concacaf Champions League final against Chivas de Guadalajara. With the focus on becoming the first MLS team to capture the regional trophy, Toronto FC has said a reserve-heavy roster will be used, especially for the Dynamo match.

“Jason was an important member of our club last season both on and off the field. He is an experienced veteran that provides us with another strong defender to an already excellent group,” Toronto FC senior vice-president of soccer operations and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a release. “We remained in contact with Jason throughout the offseason regarding his return and we are pleased to bring him back to TFC.”

Toronto FC also signed defender Julian Dunn, midfielder Aidan Daniels and winger Ryan Telfer, promoting the trio from Toronto FC II.

Dunn and Daniels become TFC’s 17th and 18th Homegrown signings.
