Amway Canadian Championship final, first leg

Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps will square off on Tuesday in the first of a two-legged final series in the 2016 Amway Canadian Championship. Vancouver, the defending champion in the competition, will attempt to win their second Voyageurs Cup, while TFC seek their fifth title all-time, and first since 2012. The Canadian Championship winner will also book their ticket to the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions League as Canada's entrant in the regional tournament. 

How they got here

TORONTO: Entered in the semifinal round, and defeated Montreal Impact 4-2 on aggregate. 

VANCOUVER: Entered in the semifinal round, defeating Ottawa Fury 3-2 on aggregate.

Series history

The teams have met four times previously in the Canadian Championship final, as the pre-MLS Whitecaps faced, and lost, to Toronto in 2009 and 2010, before the MLS-era Whitecaps met TFC in 2011 and 2012, with the Ontario club winning both of those years as well.

Final history

Toronto are 4-2 in ACC finals since 2008, losing in 2008 and 2014 to Montreal, while Vancouver are 1-5 in the finals. In addition to losing to TFC 2009-12, the Whitecaps lost to Montreal in 2013 before beating the Impact for their first triumph in the competition last year.
