Toronto FC 1 (1), Montreal Impact 0 (3) | 2019 CanChamp Final Leg 2 Recap

The Montreal Impact have ended Toronto FC's three-year stranglehold on the Canadian Championship, winning the 2019 final on penalties on Wednesday night after the teams tied on aggregate over two legs.

Toronto took Wednesday's return leg 1-0 at BMO Field on Tsubasa Endoh's goal after Ignacio Piatti's belter gave the Impact a Leg 1 win by an identical score at Stade Saputo a week ago.

In the penalty shootout, Bojan, Daniel Lovitz and Rudy Camacho converted from the spot for the Impact. Clement Diop saved Patrick Mullins, whilst Jozy Altidore struck the crossbar and Jonathan Osorio hit the left post for TFC.

It all amounted to Montreal lifting the Voyageurs Cup for the first time since 2014 and qualifying for the 2020 Concacaf Champions League in the process.

Three Things

THE BIG PICTURE:
The victory may this year's defining moment for Montreal, who are a longshot to make the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, and for Wilmer Cabrera, who is the first coach to win the U.S. Open Cup and Canadian Championship. And it may also have been a win for karma, after
Auro
's clear handball to redirect Ignacio Piatti's second-half cross went unpunished.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH:
Toronto already had their backs against the wall when Osorio walked up to the penalty spot. Diop guessed correctly, and may have saved Osorio's penalty had he not hit it wide enough that it struck the left upright, setting off wild celebrations for the visitors.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH:Lassi Lappalainen. The Finn's second-half introduction gave the Impact some needed attacking juice to at least keep TFC honest after the Reds started to take control late in the first half.
