Push to the Playoffs Starts to Heat Up
All teams have now played at least 20 regular-season games, which means the hunt for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs is officially heating up ahead of a crucial Matchday 24.
Both conferences have proven that the tables can turn quickly, with teams using the first six weeks coming out of the FIFA World Cup break as a slingshot up the standings. In the Eastern Conference, Toronto FC, Atlanta United, and the Philadelphia Union were sitting near the bottom of the conference, and now each is within just four points of the final playoff position. By the end of Matchday 24, all three could potentially end up back in the playoff picture.
The story in the Western Conference is the fact that two of the top six teams from last year’s Audi MLS Cup Playoffs field are currently on the outside looking in – Seattle Sounders FC and Austin FC. On the flip side, St. Louis CITY SC has rocketed up to sixth in the Western Conference and is pounding on the door of a top-four seed and home-field advantage.
With so much at stake coming down the stretch of the regular season, every single match could result in massive swings up and down the conference standings.
Crucial Final Hours of a Record-Setting Transfer Year
With the push to the playoffs growing, clubs only have two days left to make waves in the transfer market and punctuate a historic year.
The league’s Secondary Transfer Window will close at midnight on September 2, which aligns similarly with many of the other top global leagues for the first time. This means MLS clubs could be active when it comes to bringing in top talent to boost their chances of lifting MLS Cup presented by Audi.
2026 has already been a record transfer year with several high-priced players entering the league, including seven club-record signings, alongside global superstar free agents. MLS could potentially set transfer spending and revenue records once again, all while a record number of teenagers and players from the MLS Player Pathway are making their impact on first teams.
This historic year highlights MLS’ growing role in the global transfer market, which should be even more heightened on an exciting deadline day this Wednesday.
MLS NEXT Kicks Off Historic Seventh Season
This weekend, MLS NEXT kicks off its 2026-27 season, as the next generation of stars continues to emerge from its ranks in MLS and across U.S. national teams.
The 2026-27 season will be the largest in MLS NEXT history, with more than 53,000 players, 2,743 teams, and 310 clubs, including all 30 MLS academies, competing in more than 27,000 matches across the U.S. and Canada. It’s not just the growth of MLS NEXT, but also the remarkable production of the alumni that matters.
In 2025, the number of MLS NEXT alumni who went on to play in MLS increased 64% compared to 2024. At the MLS All-Star Game this summer, Zavier Gozo became the first player in history to make both an MLS NEXT All-Star team and an MLS All-Star team. That also extended into the World Cup, as for the first time ever, three MLS NEXT alumni saw action in the FIFA World Cup, including U.S. Men’s National Team standout Alex Freeman.
As more than 53,000 young players begin the new season, the question isn't simply who will win this year; it's who among them will be starring in MLS and representing their country on the biggest stage next.
It’s Time to Pay More Attention to Peyton Miller
From Cavan Sullivan to Julian Hall, MLS teenagers are being recognized for their game-changing play, and New England Revolution’s Peyton Miller is the next to earn those accolades.
Playing in a more attacking position, Miller has made the leap in 2026 under first-year head coach Marko Mitrović, constantly adding goals and assists for a resurgent Revolution side. Not only that, Miller has shown an infectious toughness, playing with 10 stitches near his eye the last two weeks, during which he recorded three-straight games with an assist. With sensational speed and a workmanlike grit, the teenager is hard not to root for.
Miller’s own story from his academy days to his emergence as a teenage sensation on the first team embodies the importance of MLS NEXT in the player pathway. A standout at Oakwood SC (Connecticut) in MLS NEXT, Miller was recognized by the Revolution academy and joined the club in 2021. Five years later, after dominating MLS NEXT and MLS NEXT Pro, the 18-year-old has a new long-term contract and is one of the brightest prospects in North America.
