The Vancouver Whitecaps have agreed to sell Alphonso Davies to Bayern Munich, a source confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. The Athletic was first to report the links between the winger and Bayern last week.
The source said that Davies is currently in Philadelphia, where Bayern are preparing for their friendly against Juventus on Wednesday night.
Davies will remain with the Whitecaps through the end of the MLS season, at which point he’ll complete his move to Germany. He won’t be officially eligible to join Munich’s roster until he turns 18 on Nov. 2.
The exact terms of the deal weren’t known by the source, though TSN’s Kristian Jack and The Athletic's Paul Tenorio reported earlier on Tuesday that Vancouver will collect a $13 million transfer fee that could rise significantly depending on whether Davies hits various incentives.
One of the most exciting young players in MLS, Davies has three goals and eight assists in 20 league appearances this year. The Canadian international didn’t train with Vancouver last Friday as reports of his potential move emerged and he was excused from the team ahead of their 2-0 loss at Seattle on Saturday. He participated in part of training with Vancouver on Monday morning before flying to Philadelphia to meet with Bayern Munich.
Vancouver will host Montreal in the second leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals on Wednesday night (10 pm ET; CanadaSoccer.com).
